Background
TMM Tea Tree (Pty) Ltd was formed in 2021, the majority shareholder is TMM Forestry (Pty) Ltd, whom are the largest black-owned forestry company in South Africa. TMM Forestry Pty Ltd's operations primarily focus on supplying timber to industry giants such as Sappi and Mondi. In addition to forestry, TMM has ventured into a Tea Tree project since December 2017, successfully planting 50 of the 75 targeted hectares of Tea Trees to date.
Recognizing the potential in the essential oils industry, TMM Forestry decided to explore this sector due to its success across South Africa, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Consequently, TMM Forestry established TMM Tea Tree (Pty) Ltd to capitalize on the Tea Tree oil derived from Melaleuca alternifolia trees. Tea Tree oil is renowned for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, promoting healthy skin, hair, and nails.
TMM Tea Tree (Pty) Ltd operates in the challenging environment of the Manguzi district with high summer temperatures and significant rainfall. Despite these conditions, the company has shown promising results in cultivating Tea Trees. Currently, TMM Tea Tree employs 55 local community members, emphasizing its commitment to creating economic opportunities within the region.
